NEW PLAY DEVELOPMENT
In the past
three years TheatreOne has presented a new
program entitled Emerging Voices, a series
of workshops and staged readings of new Canadian plays.
Scripts are selected from Theatre BC’s
Canadian National Playwriting Competition,
and local and regional playwrights are invited to submit
new work. The series began as an educational outreach
project primarily involving students in Vancouver Island
University’s Theatre Department. This season
Emerging Voices has grown into a full-fledged
development opportunity employing professional artists
engaged under Canadian Actors’ Equity rules.
Emerging Voices provides an important venue
through which emerging writers can have their plays
workshopped by professional artists and read before an
audience receiving valuable feedback in the process.

Tamarack by
Edward Kuhn...
An
aging poet's last desperate attempt at having his life's
work more widely recognized alienates him from his
long-suffering wife, who finally abandons their
wilderness life for a more tolerable existence in a
nearby seniors' residence. Written with warmth and wit,
this brand new play is a lovely look at just how
dangerous a little learning can be.
The staged reading will feature veteran Canadian artists
Antony Holland, Patricia Ludwick, and Matthew Walker.

Recess
by Cody Porter
A
notable entrant in Theatre BC’s Canadian National
Playwriting Competition in 2009.
When times get tough, they
just seem to get tougher, and tougher. Cody Porter’s
new play, explores the lengths a man will go when the
world seems to be failing him at every turn. A darkly
accurate portrayal of a middle class professional waging
his own private war against the recession and trying to
keep everything under wraps on the home front. As they
used to say in the army…Situation Normal…All Fouled Up!
Starring Nicolle Nattrass,
Carolyn Westberg, and Garry Davey.
